About the Role

MWH is a leading water and wastewater treatment-focused general contractor in the US. We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Project Manager to support the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Salton Sea Species Conservation Habitat Project. The role combines traditional construction management responsibilities with strong environmental oversight, supervising a small project staff and service consultants while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and client expectations.

Functions
  • The Environmental Project Manager leads the development, implementation, and oversight of the client's environmental permitting and compliance needs, ensuring regulatory compliance and championing sustainability initiatives.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in environmental performance and requirements on the project.
  • Interfaces with clients, oversight representatives, regulatory agencies, and consultants for both business development and project execution.
  • Makes decisions and recommendations that enhance corporate relationships with clients and improve the profitability of managed projects.
  • Develops new business opportunities related to specific clients, client groups, or geographic areas.
  • Initiates and maintains liaison with clients, consultants, and contractors to facilitate construction activities.
  • Ensures adherence to all client, company, and project policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Completes project objectives and performance standards within the boundaries of client policies and procedures.
  • Provides oversight and direction for all environmental compliance and regulatory mandates on a project, interacting with agencies on behalf of the client.
  • Plans, coordinates, and/or supervises activities of all company and consultant personnel on assigned project(s).
  • Supervises day‑to‑day environmental, ecological, cultural, and tribal support staff.
  • Implements the company safety program, ensuring employees follow safe work practices and company guidelines.
  • Attends industry networking events.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or environmental sciences;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in environmental management, with demonstrated success in leading environmental initiatives and teams. Experience in heavy civil engineering or water resources preferred.
  • Subject matter expert on all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA).
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies to ensure full compliance and reduce environmental liability, managing and submitting all required environmental permits and documentation.
  • Conducts or oversees environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments, and leads incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Collects, manages, and analyzes environmental performance data, preparing comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • 8+ years of management experience, including client interface, solicitation, marketing, business development, planning, execution, project delivery, and staff supervision.
  • Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, and standards and their impact on project activities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, supervisory, and planning skills.
  • Ability to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Project P/L experience.
Compensation

Anticipated salary for the position is budgeted at $180,000 - $220,000 a year.
