The City of Stockton’s Municipal Utilities Department is currently recruiting for a Plant Maintenance Mechanic. This position performs a wide range of mechanical installation, repair, maintenance, and modification tasks at the wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant, and related pumping station facilities. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
The Plant Maintenance Mechanic works a 9/80 schedule
:
- Monday–Thursday: 7:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
- Fridays: 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with every other Friday off

Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a for-cause employment status, and are represented by Operating Engineers Local No. 3 Operations and Maintenance Unit.
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both.
This list may be used to fill future vacancies.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a medical examination; which includes a back evaluation and drug screen, and background investigation that includes fingerprinting.
Entry levelInitially under close supervision, incumbents perform the more routine mechanical maintenance duties at a treatment plant and related pumping station facilities while learning City policies and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more diversified and are performed under less supervision.
Journey levelUnder general supervision, incumbents are fully competent to perform the full range of assigned duties. Incumbents are expected to exercise independent judgment in accomplishing the full range of governmental accounting and auditing duties. This class is distinguished from Senior Plant Maintenance Mechanic in that the latter performs more complex mechanical maintenance work.

Education/ExperiencePossession of a high school diploma or GED AND one of the following:
Entry LevelOne year of experience in the maintenance of treatment plant, distribution and production facilities or general mechanical maintenance work; or two years of experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing internal combustion engines and generators.
Journey levelTwo years of experience in mechanical maintenance work at a treatment plant; or four years of experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing internal combustion engines and generators.
Other Requirements Licenses and Certifications- All levels
- Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Possession and maintenance of a California Class A driver’s license and adherence to DOT regulations within one (1) year from date of hire is desirable.
- Entry Level
- Must obtain and maintain a valid California Boater Card within the first 90 days of employment as a required condition of continued employment with the City of Stockton.
- Must obtain and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certifications within the first 90 days of employment as a required condition of continued employment with the City of Stockton.
- California Water Environment Association (CWEA) certification as a Grade I Plant Maintenance Mechanical Technologist is desirable.
- Journey level
