DESCRIPTIONThe mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well‑being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.
UC San Diego SHW cluster reports through UC San Diego Health System. The cluster includes Student Health Services, Health Promotion Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Assessment and Analytics, Strategic Planning Innovation and Research, and SHW Administration. CAPS delivers campus‑based mental health services to registered UC San Diego undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS is accredited by IACS and affiliated with APPIC.
CAPS is fully committed to self‑examination, peer review, and quality improvement through metrics, data, clinical outcomes, client experience measurements and feedback.
The incumbent performs a wide range of general psychiatric tasks with a culturally diverse college population of undergraduate and graduate and professional school student clients. Responsibilities include conducting psychiatric evaluations, prescribing and managing psychotropic medications and following response to such treatment with follow‑up visits, making recommendations regarding outpatient treatment; intervening in cases of psychiatric emergency, facilitating hospitalization as needed; referring to on‑ and off‑campus resources for follow‑up care;
providing brief counseling and education about psychiatric treatment; and consulting and training to CAPS, Student Health Services and other university staff.
- Current, unrestricted, state of CA MD or DO license.
- Current valid Federal Controlled Substance registration certificate.
- Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
- Knowledge of the current laws, procedures and ethical principles that govern the practice of psychiatry.
- Demonstrated skill to provide psychiatric diagnoses, plan and implement a variety of case dispositions.
- Experience and ability in prescribing and monitoring controlled substance medications.
- Skill to formulate and conduct treatment plans and programs.
- Ability to work with a diverse population and traditionally underrepresented student groups.
- Ability to provide consultation and educative services.
- Ability to relate warmly, humanely, sensitively and empathetically to others.
- Academic and experiential knowledge of psychiatric/psychological science, including psychotherapeutic processes and procedures.
- Skill to conduct brief individual counseling and psychotherapy.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform effectively in a service environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings. Working knowledge of electronic medical/mental health records systems (EMR or EHR).
- Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, and demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. - Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of state and federal health care privacy laws, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Title II, HIPAA and FERPA, as well as professional ethics or regulations that govern the work.
- Must complete all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD, CAPS and SHW on a timely basis.
