Position: Program Support Assistant (Credentialing Specialist)

Overview

Summary The Program Support Assistant - Credentialing Specialist is responsible for providing administrative and technical direction and support to the credentialing operations within the Credentialing & Privileging Office under the Chief of Staff. The incumbent collects relevant data and supports the decision-making process to ensure that qualified health care professionals are providing appropriate care in appropriate settings.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position — applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement — 02/06/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement:
Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.

An SF-50 that shows time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate one-year time-in-grade as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note:

Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

GS-06 grade level
:
One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Specialized experience includes: ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet deadlines; attention to detail to analyze applications, documents, files and other material pertaining to the credentialing program; skill in using software applications such as word processing and databases and internet database applications for data entry, file maintenance and data retrieval; ability to communicate in writing to prepare emails, letters, and reports;

knowledge of medical terminology to assure competence/appropriateness of credentials requested; knowledge of the contacts required for verification of information in health care provider files; ability to communicate orally technical information to a diverse group of individuals with varying levels of understanding; comprehensive knowledge of Vet Pro policies including Vet Pro Data Integrity, VAMC level access control, mandatory annual Vet Pro security and confidentiality training, and mandatory annual privacy act training;

considerable knowledge of accreditation standards and credentialing/regulatory procedures (e.g., TJC and OIG/CHIP) affecting the use of program resources; comprehensive knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and precedents (VHA Handbooks, Directives, Memos, Notices) and local medical center procedures related to credentialing.

GS-07 grade level
:
One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level). Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: verifying information in health care provider files; maintaining confidentiality of information per Privacy Act; providing quality control checks on data; managing multiple projects and priorities and meeting deadlines; using software applications for data entry, file maintenance and data retrieval; researching regulations and standards to identify actions to correct problems.

There is no educational substitution for GS-06/07. Best Qualified: experience applying credentialing rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and compliance requirements; skill in analyzing credentialing database systems and processes to achieve data integrity; skill in utilizing various databases and electronic systems; experience communicating with staff at various managerial levels; administrative experience in healthcare.

Financial Management. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note:

A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited based on actual time spent. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate the nature of duties and responsibilities and hours per week.
