The San Diego Community College District accepts applications for adjunct positions which may be filled throughout the academic year. The Veterans Mental Health Counselor is a dual role focused on outreach, training, and direct support for student veterans.
Part‑time (15‑20 hours per week, 40 weeks per year) funded for the grant term Jan 2025 to Dec 2026. Primary focus on outreach, training, and direct support for student veterans.
Key Responsibilities- Establish and expand partnerships with mental health providers, VA hospitals, county veterans service offices, and local/regional CSU and UC campus Veterans Resource Centers.
- Outreach and support for student veterans through individual counseling, group therapy, case management, and resource development.
- Lead and deliver training programs for faculty, staff, and students on veterans' mental health and challenges.
- Collaborate with the Mental Health Peer Educator Coordinator to hire, train, and supervise student veterans serving as Mental Health Peer Educators.
- Regularly report to the Grant or Program Coordinator on program progress and outcomes.
- Work closely with campus partners to ensure veterans' mental health and wellness is a visible priority on campus.
- Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, or equivalent.
- Degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Alternative:
Bachelor’s degree in one of the listed fields plus a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
- Licensed or licensed‑eligible in the State of California (MSW, MFT, PCC, or Psychologist) with experience in counseling, case management, or similar roles, preferably focused on veterans' mental health.
- Experience in outreach, training, and program development with diverse or underserved populations, especially veteran populations.
- Clinical and/or personal experience with veterans, including PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, and mood disorders.
- Ability to build rapport with veteran students in one‑on‑one and group settings.
- Knowledge of local veteran resources in San Diego and ability to connect students with services.
- Expertise in clinical assessment, including suicidal ideation, lethality, and risk to self or others.
- Crisis intervention skills with demonstrated ability to manage high‑risk situations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage and educate a wide range of stakeholders.
- Culturally competent care for veterans and diverse populations.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills, meeting grant deadlines and managing multiple tasks.
- Experience with program oversight, including peer‑led initiatives and guidance to student veterans.
- Proficiency with technology for clinical software, case management, data collection, and report writing.
- Experience with data collection and reporting, compiling and submitting regular reports as required by funding sources.
- Ability to forge partnerships with community partners and create linkages for veteran students.
- Professional liability insurance required.
- California Community College Counselor Credential (valid for life) is preferred.
