Francis Parker School (Parker) is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1,330 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Founded in 1912, the school’s mission is “to create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world.” Parker has two campuses: one in Mission Hills (Lower School, Junior Kindergarten - Grade
5), and a second in Linda Vista (Middle and Upper School, Grades 6 - 12).
According to California Education Code 49426, the school nurse strengthens the educational process by improving and protecting student health, identifying and removing barriers to learning, and promoting prevention of illness. The credentialed school nurse is a leader in support, planning, coordination, care, communication, education, and advocacy.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities- Provide acute, chronic, episodic, and emergency health care.
- Provide health education and counseling to students and staff.
- Advocate for the health and safety of students and staff.
- Provide training to school personnel on emergency procedures and care.
- Serve as partner with community organizations, liaison between school personnel, families, and healthcare providers.
- Facilitate healthy development and positive student responses to interventions.
- Provide leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.
- Intervene with actual and potential student and staff health problems.
- Use clinical judgment in case management services.
- Act as primary case manager, especially with communicable disease cases.
- Collaborate to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self‑management, self‑advocacy, and learning.
- Take on additional roles as needed to meet the needs of the school community.
- Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of students.
- Communicate with students, families, and health care providers.
- Interpret assessments and medical information for school staff.
- Participate in student support team meetings and individual meetings concerning student or staff health.
- Design and implement Individualized School Health Plans and emergency care plans.
- Provide case management services for students.
- Counsel parents regarding health and school issues and provide referrals.
- Administer, monitor medications, and manage immunization compliance.
- Serve as a resource to staff and provide in‑services on health topics.
- Develop curriculum and deliver comprehensive health education.
- Serve as health expert and advocate for staff, students, and families.
- Promote a safe school environment for emotional and physical safety.
- Provide direct services such as vision and hearing assessments, and care for illnesses and injuries.
- Educate on safety before overnight field trips; maintain stocked medical emergency backpacks.
- Co‑chair Wellness and Nutrition committees; write weekly newsletters.
- Notify families of communicable disease outbreaks and coordinate with health departments.
- Participate in Safety Committee and Medical Advisory Board; lead disaster preparedness.
- Maintain student records and document visits.
- Write health care policy and procedures; perform TB risk assessment questionnaires.
- California Registered Nurse.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Nursing.
- California School Nurse Credential.
- Knowledge of many areas of health, school laws, state regulations.
- Ability to work independently, as a team member, and communicate well.
- Ability to assess situations and act quickly.
- Working knowledge of computer operating systems and ability to learn new systems.
- Healthcare Provider BLS CPR certification; preferred American Red Cross CPR instructor.
- Ability to multitask.
Parker offers a competitive salary and benefits, including TIAA retirement benefits and full medical/dental coverage. Salary range: $90,000 – $100,000 per year, negotiable based on experience and education.
