Fund Canna is seeking an Underwriter/Senior Credit Analyst to evaluate credit risk and make underwriting decisions. This role is designed for a strong underwriter who exercises judgment, thinks beyond templates, and balances growth, speed, and risk in a complex lending environment. The successful candidate will take ownership of credit decisions, clearly articulate risk rationale, and serve as a risk partner to the business, with a clear path to expanded authority over time.
The right candidate is a strong communicator and seeks to both work as part of a team to advance the underwriting and credit departments and work independently to diligently review applicant files and assess opportunity and risk.
- Independently underwrite credit applications within approval authority, exercising sound judgment through analysis of:
- Financial and non-financial diligence including review and assessment of bank statements, financial statements, credit/background review, licensing/compliance and more.
- Cash flow analyses and holistic risk assessments through lenses of profitability, liquidity, leverage, and solvency.
- Capital & corporate structure, business continuance, and impact of ownership to likelihood of repayment.
- Articulating credit rationales that balance risk & reward, inclusive of communication of your support for approvals and declines.
- Supplying the Sales team with a detailed understanding of applicant credit profiles to support informed and effective customer communication.
- Presenting to EVP of Risk and other executive leadership in credit committee and escalated review environments when warranted.
- Working with and communicating across departments while maintaining underwriting discipline by:
- Keeping accurate underwriting data and documentation within CRM and internal systems.
- Contributing to ongoing improvements in credit policy, technical systems, underwriting frameworks, and risk management practices.
- Participating in portfolio-level analysis to understand performance trends and credit outcomes.
This role supports funding to highly regulated cannabis or ancillary businesses and requires comfort with understanding and assessing (with guidance where appropriate):
- Licensing and regulatory risk
- State and vertical-dependent credit quality
- Delinquent receivables
- Cash-heavy operations and non-traditional banking structures
- Seasonal and volatile revenue patterns
- Margin pressure from taxation and pricing dynamics
- Rapid growth alongside abrupt downside risk
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field, and/or 3+ years of relevant experience in credit or underwriting.
- Strong ability to analyze and interpret financial statements and bank data.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and take accountability for credit outcomes.
- Ability to articulate underwriting conclusions clearly and concisely.
- Confidence to balance relationship management with risk discipline.
- Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Salesforce or CRM experience a plus.
