Tax Manager, Corporate/ASC 740

BDO USA is seeking a highly experienced tax professional to serve as a Core Tax Services (CTS) Manager – ASC 740. The role involves advising clients on complex tax implications, leading compliance and consulting activities, and acting as the primary client contact for ASC 740 matters.

Job Summary

The CTS Manager – ASC 740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and identifying compliant methods while acting as the primary contact for complex corporate and ASC 740 tax issues. The role requires applying deep tax knowledge to understand potential risks, communicate changes, and recommend solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure client and firm compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
    • Conduct top-level review of tax return information, resolve all tax issues, and involve specialists as appropriate.
    • Communicate issues identified in tax accrual review with Assurance clients.
    • Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and time vs. budget, timely billing, collection of A/R, and managing out-of-scope activity.
    • Manage client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
    • Provide timely advice to clients.
  • Research
    • Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.
    • Identify complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provide efficient research methodology.
    • Train managers/staff on research skills and ASC 740 issue framing.
    • Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) Tax Accruals
    • Apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding ASC 740.
    • Explain and discuss components of the income tax provision, uncertain tax positions, and other ASC 740 complexities with clients.
    • Communicate with Assurance team to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope and delivery dates.
    • Review tax provisions, applying in-depth ASC 740 knowledge and reviewing prepared work papers.
    • Utilize and manage Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes.
    • Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties; develop and implement work plans including STS assistance.
    • Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA). Provide exam support and frame projects for delegation.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop in-depth understanding of taxation areas such as corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, transfer pricing, and R&D tax benefits.
    • Organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in area of specialization; train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on ASC 740.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
    • Consistently suggest improvements to prior work products or approaches.
    • Lead marketing campaigns (if applicable) and present complex strategies to clients.
    • Collaborate with the Firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high-quality ASC 740 analyses.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
  • Review work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provide review comments.
  • Train Associates and Seniors on software tools.
  • Act as a career advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Schedule and manage workload of Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (required).
  • Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).
Experience
  • Five (5) or more years of prior experience (required).
  • Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for both privately held and publicly traded clients (required).
  • Supervisory experience (required).
  • Multinational client experience (preferred).
