Tax Senior Manager, Corporate/ASC 740 Focus

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, selects actions to reduce tax burden, identifies compliance methods, and serves as primary contact for complex tax issues. The role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicating risks and changes in tax policy, and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. Additionally, the manager commands leadership responsibilities within the office/region, participates in business development, and maintains client relationships as the primary contact for complex tax inquiries.

Job Summary

As a key member of BDO’s Core Tax Services team, you will: design and implement tax strategies, provide expert ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) guidance, manage client tax advisory projects, research and apply firm standards, and act as a primary consultant for complex tax matters. You will also contribute to firm leadership, marketing, networking, and business development while ensuring compliance with firm policies.

Job Duties
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure client compliance while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
    • Conduct top‑level review of tax returns and resolve issues, involving specialists where appropriate.
    • Plan early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with clients and partners.
    • Ensure compliance with all firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
  • Research
    • Identify research needs, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.
    • Develop research methodology and train managers/staff on effective research.
    • Engage firm specialists when necessary.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) Tax Accruals
    • Apply firm policies and ASC 740 standards proactively.
    • Assist colleagues in learning ASC 740 and firm policies.
    • Review tax provisions and prepare work papers.
    • Explain ASC 740 components and uncertain tax positions to clients.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Recommend and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.
    • Apply combined tax knowledge and business insights to recommend solutions.
    • Collaborate with specialist teams to assess applicability of specialized consulting.
    • Monitor implementation of client service plans for tax consulting projects.
    • Respond to federal and state agency inquiries with minimal assistance.
    • Provide assistance with protests at the appeals level.
    • Implement firm strategies and manage client expectations.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop in‑depth expertise in one or more areas of taxation (e.g., corporate, state/local, international, transfer pricing, R&D incentives).
    • Conduct or participate in external CPE training sessions annually.
    • Train and mentor associates on specialization areas.
  • Strategy Development
    • Propose new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or personnel.
    • Research and implement innovative tax strategies.
    • Suggest improvements to previous work products and approaches.
    • Lead marketing campaigns as applicable.
    • Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
  • Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
  • Review work prepared by team members and provide comments.
  • Train associates and seniors on current software tools.
  • Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
  • Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
