RICK (formerly referred to as RICK Engineering Company) is a California-based engineering, planning, and design firm that’s been in business for more than 70 years. We have grown our employee base and expanded geographically and are looking to continue that growth by expanding our Environmental Services Division. RICK is seeking a team-oriented and motivated Director of Environmental Planning with critical and strategic thinking skills and a strong work ethic, to join our team in our headquarters location in San Diego, California.
RICK provides CEQA and NEPA services to both the public and private sectors. The position will include an emphasis on growth of a new service area through marketing, proposal preparation, and business development as well as project delivery.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the preparation and processing of CEQA compliance documents and related technical studies as well as client expectations, project schedules, and budget. Duties include document preparation; coordination with other environmental planning staff, subconsultant technical specialists and other subconsultants; budget and invoice management; as well as interaction with clients and reviewing agencies (county, city, CDFW, RWQCB, USACE).
Proposal preparation and business development are also required, and the successful candidate must possess the experience, communication skills, and interest for these activities. The ideal Director of Environmental Services candidate must also possess strong Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) and interpersonal skills along with the proven ability to build collaborative relationships among team members, other RICK staff, clients, subconsultants, and agencies.
Responsibilities also include business development with Southern California agencies and clients to grow a new service area at RICK and leadership of 2-5 staff members.

Minimum Requirements for Director of Environmental Services
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental studies, environmental science, environmental engineering, public planning, or a related field.
- 15 or more years of experience is preferred. (Candidates with less experience but otherwise excellent credentials will also be considered.)
- Candidate should have a strong understanding of San Diego and broader Southern California region and relationship(s) with agencies or key clients is required.
- Experience in leading proposals and business pursuits and marketing of environmental consulting services.
- Existing client relationships and ability to build relationships with a wide variety of people.
- Excellent writing, verbal communication, analytical, and presentation skills.
- Strong attention to detail, including strong spelling, proofreading, and organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Master’s (or equivalent) in environmental studies, environmental science, geography, natural science, environmental engineering, public planning, business, or related field.
