EM FACILITY LAB ASSISTANT

Scripps Research, a nonprofit biomedical institute in La Jolla, California, is seeking a motivated candidate to support maintenance and oversight of our electron microscopes and related equipment. No prior electron microscopy experience is required; on‑site training will be provided.

• Initiate in‑house maintenance calls for facility issues, ranging from carpet cleaning to air‑conditioner repairs.
• Repair instrumentation not covered by a service contract (e.g., vacuum stations, glow‑discharge units, carbon evaporators, cryogenic devices).
• Oversee troubleshooting and maintenance of electron microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, and related ancillary equipment.
• Oversee vendors to honor service contracts.
• Act as the point of contact for field‑service engineers and vendors.
• Maintain inventory of lab supplies and consumables.
• Develop written, standard operating procedures for the instrumentation.
• Train new electron‑microscope users and schedule equipment usage.
• Become proficient in electron‑microscopy data collection and sample preparation.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline with a minimum of one year related experience.
• Strong electrical, mechanical, software, and physics background.
• Experience with vacuum systems, high‑voltage supplies, electron sources, optics, digital imaging, and processing.
• Teaching and technical writing experience.
• Experience in electron microscopy is useful but not required.

The expected hiring range is $19.28 to $23.25 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
