Job SummaryOur San Diego, California office is seeking a Transportation Engineer. This position requires technical expertise in roadway and highway design and involves comprehensive engineering duties, including design or design support, developing contract plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates. Design elements may include geometrics, cross‑sections, grading and drainage, trackwork, utility relocations, traffic control, and other hardscape components.
Responsibilities- Work on aspects of transportation design, including alignments, profile grades, cross‑sections, drainage facilities, construction details, construction staging, and utility plans.
- Engage with roadways in urban or rural settings and complex interchange designs.
- Participate in pavement mix and thickness design.
- Calculate quantities and prepare engineering estimates.
- Assist in preparing technical reports and correspondence for transportation projects.
- Perform preliminary field investigations and existing data research for project base files with topography, mapping, and utilities.
- Organise and maintain project files.
- Ensure all submittals meet company production and design standards.
- Coordinate with different transportation sectors within TYLin and other professionals to build and maintain roadways.
- Under senior oversight, design 3‑D geometric freeways, highways, and streets.
- Develop conceptual roadways, interchanges, and intersections to improve capacity and Level of Service.
- Develop flood abatement and stormwater treatment through innovative regional facilities and maximising existing drainage systems.
- Design stormwater management facilities, collection systems, and modelling.
- Use various data sources, standards, internet, reports, surveys, and personal contacts to facilitate transportation development and analysis.
- Present results in written documentation, plans, and presentations.
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria with judgment to produce the best results and make engineering recommendations.
- Prepare and disseminate information through interaction with internal and external contacts.
- Other assignments as needed.
- 4–8 years of relevant experience in transportation design (roadway/highway).
- Professional Engineer license preferred.
- Technical (Bachelor’s or higher) degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution.
- Experience using Open Roads software.
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office, Acrobat/Bluebeam, 3‑D modelling and other engineering production software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

TYLin is committed to pay equity. The base compensation range for this position is $88,800–$133,200 annually, reflecting the local market and the unique combination of skills.
