Space Opto-Mechanical Technician at General Atomics (San Diego, California)
Job SummaryGA’s Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) Group focuses on the military and commercial applications of advanced electromagnetic technologies, including power generation and distribution, magnetic levitation, laser and weapons systems, and systems design and engineering. The EMS Group supports government customers, which include the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation, and a range of commercial customers. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Space Opto-Mechanical Technician in this division.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Broad knowledge base spanning mechanical and optical assembly, advanced electronics, and test instrumentation.
- Fabrications, modifications, assemblies, installations, operations, repairs, and maintenance of test equipment with minimal supervision.
- Assists with complex tests and development activities; records, evaluates, and reports data to the test team.
- Summarizes test data via written tabulation, charts, graphs, and prepares written reports.
- Under moderate supervision, assists Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Test Engineers in assembly, integration, and test procedures for space hardware and related assemblies.
- Works with Test and Design engineers to troubleshoot failures.
- Builds and maintains mechanical and electrical ground support equipment for space hardware testing, including fixtures, test benches, thermal vacuum chambers, vibration tables, fluid mechanics, and data acquisition.
- Maintains equipment and systems, implements modifications and engineering changes as necessary; identifies operational problems and reports deficiencies.
- Working knowledge of ISO 7/8 requirements and standards.
- Understands all applicable processes and procedures and provides continual input for improvement and streamlining.
- Maintains a productive and safe working environment in accordance with operating procedures, workmanship standards, and best practices.
- Travel up to 25% as needed to support manufacturing and testing.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent with five or more years of experience; equivalent experience may be substituted for education.
- Proficient with conventional hand tools and laboratory equipment; able to perform routine tasks safely according to established practices.
- Demonstrated experience and strong mechanical and optical background in manufacturing, testing, and operation of space systems hardware.
- Experience in space, aviation, military, or other high-reliability operating environments is highly desirable.
- Understands space and flight hardware handling, including ESD and cleanroom requirements.
- Ability to understand new concepts quickly and work under general supervision, either independently or in a team.
- Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; knowledge of computer applications pertinent to the field is a plus.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required; existing clearance preferred.

Salary range: $60,670 – $90,198
