Primary responsibility is teaching public safety management courses and maintaining a contemporary curriculum aligned with industry certifications. Assignment: 15 class hours per week; may include day, evening, Saturday classes; in person, hybrid, Hy-flex, and asynchronous modalities. Release: 0.40 as Program Director for the Public Safety Management Degree Program.
- Teach public safety management courses, such as Foundations in Public Safety Management, Public Safety Legal Issues and Public Policy, Strategic Planning in Public Safety Management, and Whole Community Approach - Government Partners, Non-Profit and Allied Organizations in Public Safety.
- Maintain contemporary public safety management curriculum in alignment with industry required certifications.
- Possibly teach CSTI and FEMA embedded curriculum certification courses depending on qualifications and Department needs.
- Maintain regular office hours for student advisement, participate in curriculum review and development, maintain qualifications for embedded industry certifications, and serve on College and District committees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MBA, Master’s degree in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness, Crises Management, Disaster Management, or Cybersecurity OR the equivalent.
Pending Title 5 Regulations (August 8, 2025): 53410(b)(3)(B) outlines minimum qualifications for faculty teaching upper division courses where a master’s degree is not generally expected. Requirements include:
- A bachelor’s degree in the discipline,
- Six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment, and
- Licensure (CSTI Emergency Management Instructor Certification) or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional highly desirable qualifications include teaching experience and meeting minimum requirements for CSTI Outreach Instructor in the Emergency Management Outreach Program and FEMA facilitator requirements. The candidate should demonstrate evidence of expertise in Emergency Management, relevant coursework, teaching effectiveness, recent college/university teaching, and ongoing professional growth. Experience with diverse student populations and equity-minded practices is valued. A master’s degree in related fields or equivalent is preferred.
Ability to obtain CSTI/FEMA certifications within one year of employment is required.
