The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting to fill one part-time vacancy for an Educational Interpreter - Deaf and Hard of Hearing for South County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) within the Student Services and Programs Division. This position will work with South County SELPA Office - Davila and/or member districts and requires bilingual skills in American Sign Language.
Under the direction of special education administrative staff, the Educational Interpreter DHH provides communication facilitation between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and others in an educational setting and for other school-related activities, including extracurricular activities, as designated in a student’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
QualificationsRequirements / Qualifications
This position requires one of the following certifications:
- National certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); or
- Achieved a score of 4.0 or above on one of the following:
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA);
- Educational Sign Skills Evaluation – Interpreter and Receptive (ESSE-I/R); or
- National Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI) Assessment
This position requires possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least one year of experience (paid or volunteer) working with youth in an organized setting, ideally with at-risk youth.
Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND;
- Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR
- Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction.

Employment with the San Diego County Office of Education is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer background check and physical exam, which includes a drug and alcohol screening.
The ESSA exam will be administered by the SDCOE HR office and offered virtually twice a month.
The results of this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacancy and any other vacancies in this classification for the next six months.
