The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for a English Language Development Assistant on a continuous basis for PERMANENT and SUBSTITUTE assignments. Fluency in Spanish is required.
The English Language Development Assistant provides assistance to individual or small groups of students in English language development in classrooms and in “pull-out” settings; tutors individual students in English and in the student’s primary language as directed, and performs a variety of related duties in the maintenance of an effective learning environment.
This position is part-time and will offer the classified benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, and will participate in the CalPERS state retirement system.

Requirements / QualificationsThis position requires a combination of education, training and experience which includes possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; completion of at least 48 semester units earned at an accredited college or university or an Associate degree, including college-level course work in general academic subject areas such as math, science, and English; and one year of experience (paid or volunteer) working with youth in an organized setting, ideally with at-risk youth.
Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
- Completion of at least 48 semester units at an institution of higher education; OR
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR
- Successful completion of an assessment*, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction.
* The ESSA exam will be administered by the SDCOE HR office to candidates who meet minimum requirements for the classification.
Certificates and Licenses:
- A valid California driver’s license may be required for some assignments

The results of this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacancy and any other vacancies in this classification for the next six (6) months, or until the list is exhausted.

SDCOE is also building our substitute/limited-term pool for English Language Development Assistant with individuals who prefer to work on an on-call, as-needed or limited-term basis. Substitute assignments are paid on Step 01 of the Classified Support Salary Schedule ($21.48/hr) and are not eligible for health benefits. Substitutes will need to successfully pass an examination and will be placed on the eligibility list.

It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost that must be paid in the form of a money order or cashiers check).
