The Commuter and Transfer Student Success Coach supports the academic success, engagement, and retention of commuter and transfer students at San Diego State University. Reporting to the Assistant Director for the Center for Commuter Life, this position provides advising, mentoring, programming, and outreach while coordinating student success initiatives, peer mentoring programs, and campus partnerships. The role plays a key part in fostering belonging, access, and holistic support for commuter and transfer student populations.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as a primary point of contact and advisor for commuter and transfer students, providing guidance on university requirements, policies, resources, and success pathways.
- Develop, coordinate, and support mentoring programs, workshops, events, and co‑curricular initiatives that promote commuter and transfer student engagement and success.
- Collaborate with campus partners, faculty, families, and community stakeholders to advance commuter and transfer student success initiatives.
- Manage daily operations of the Center for Commuter Life, including supervision and coordination of student assistants and peer mentors.
- Support administrative and operational functions, including program assessment, reporting, marketing communications, and participation in university programs and committees.
- Make a meaningful impact supporting commuter and transfer students’ academic success, belonging, and persistence.
- Work in a student‑centered, mission‑driven environment focused on equity, inclusion, and holistic student support.
- Gain hands‑on experience in advising, mentoring, program development, and student engagement initiatives.
- Collaborate with campus partners across Student Affairs to support retention and graduation efforts.
- Build professional experience in higher education with opportunities for leadership, creativity, and growth.
- This is a full‑time (1.0 time‑base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. (Ability to work evenings/weekends)
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
The Center for Commuter Life supports the success and retention of commuter and transfer students through comprehensive advising, mentoring, and co‑curricular engagement opportunities. Under the leadership of the Assistant Director, the department provides consultation, guidance, and coordinated programming designed to foster belonging, leadership development, and academic success for both prospective and current students. The Center collaborates across Student Affairs to deliver mentoring programs, events, and initiatives that enhance retention, academic excellence, and graduation outcomes.
In partnership with departments such as the Center for Student Organizations and Activities, the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the Glazer Center for Leadership and Service, the Center for Commuter Life offers integrated support services that meet student needs beyond traditional business hours, including evenings and weekends.
Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis. Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field;
