Overview and Description

The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has 38 ladder-rank and 11 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. The department supports undergraduate and graduate programs with substantial course offerings and enrollments. Reporting to the Student Affairs Manager, the Student Affairs Advisor applies professional student services concepts and serves as a key resource for undergraduate students interested in attending law school by providing pre-law academic and career advising, coordinating pre-law initiatives, and enhancing the visibility of the Pathway to University of San Diego (USD) Law Program.

The incumbent coordinates with the USD Office of Admissions to support the growth, reach, and effectiveness of the Pathway to USD Law Program, including recruitment, training and programming priorities in collaboration with USD Admissions.

Responsibilities and responsibilities attributed to the role include providing pre-law advising, coordinating programs, and serving as a liaison between UCSD and USD in relation to the Pathway to USD Law Program.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and advise students on matters related to the department’s undergraduate program, curricula and University policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.
  • Ability to set up and maintain internal academic records for students, to audit forms and to assemble documents.
  • Computer skills with ability to access and maneuver through student databases, to perform internet searches, maintain websites, and utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite.
  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to undergraduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department's goals and objectives for the program.
  • Understanding of University rules and regulations.
  • Ability to interpret requirements and procedures at a university, including enrollment, registration, grading and graduation.
  • Interpersonal skills and demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and working as part of a team.
  • Experience and skills for effective one-on-one counseling and active listening.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to interact effectively with people from different backgrounds and nationalities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with faculty and students, and to handle sensitive matters with tact.

  • Experience working with minimal supervision, demonstrated initiative and self-direction.

Special Conditions

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance of background check results.
  • This job is primarily on the main campus in La Jolla with occasional visits to the University of San Diego School of Law.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,400 - $93,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $26.53 - $44.92.
