About Kaiser San Diego Medical Center

San Diego Medical Center (SDMC) is an adult anesthesia practice, and there is a core team of pediatric anesthesia consultants who do 5-15 % of their actual practice in pediatric anesthesia. Pediatric cases include general surgery, urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, GI, IR, and radiology. There are 10-20 neonatal cases per year from the NICU. SDMC has a pediatric floor but no PICU.

Pediatric team members take one week of home pediatric call once per month during which they are called for NICU cases, children under 1 year of age, or children under 14 who are ASA 3 or higher. There is no CRNA supervision for these specific pediatric core cases.

About the Area

San Diego captures the essence of coastal living with its beachside communities and lively downtown. The city s coastal climate allows for year-round visits to the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and Legoland. For culture seekers, San Diego features a range of culinary delights and unique architectural landscapes influenced by the city s proximity to Mexico and Spanish history.

Working Here

The San Diego service area is one of the region’s largest, with impressive geographical coverage, over 1,100 physicians, and about 25 satellite offices to complement the main medical center. We maintain a singular, well-defined culture grounded in three pillars that improve outcomes: physician well-being and passion for medicine; energized and cohesive workforce; and patient engagement in overall health. This environment supports collaboration, educational and research opportunities, residency programs and fellowships, and participation in clinical studies and trials.

The Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Diego is a diverse group of 70+ Physicians and 50+ Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists that practice in a team model. Our group includes graduates from top ACGME-accredited programs in Cardiothoracic, Critical Care, Obstetric, Pain, and Pediatric anesthesia, with additional fellowship expertise in Regional, Neuro-, and Thoracic Anesthesia. All partner physicians are Diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

In San Diego, the practice includes a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient surgeries across sub-specialties, excluding Cardiac, Trauma, and Transplant. The General Anesthesiologist’s scope includes pediatric, obstetric, gynecologic, general, neurosurgical, vascular, thoracic, orthopedic cases, and related services for GI, Radiology, and Interventional Radiology. Night calls are expected and evenly distributed among partners and pre-partners. Time allocation is approximately 30% supervising CRNAs and 70% performing cases.

There may be a maximum of one resident at our main hospital.

We have experienced growth with The San Diego Medical Center opened in 2017, and another major medical center in San Marcos began operation in August 2023. There are 6 operating sites: 3 hospitals and 3 outpatient centers. Expect travel between Otay and San Marcos, so living centrally is advantageous.
