Overview

Under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant maintains the organization's financial records in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. The Staff Accountant is familiar with full cycle accounting and understands all processes and documents necessary to close a reporting period. The position is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, reviewing financial transactions, preparing journal entries, assisting with audits and budgeting processes, reconciling accounts performing day-to-day general accounting functions.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS
  • Review, record and reconcile deposits and accounts receivable accounts.
  • Create invoices according to company policies and funder requirements.
  • Communicate with customers and internal staff to ensure validity and collectability of accounts receivable.
  • Prepare accounting schedules and reports.
  • Prepare and review journal entries.
  • Prepare analyses and documents in preparation for various audits.
  • Analyze current procedures and recommend changes to develop and implement best practice of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain chart of accounts and determine proper account coding for all classes of transactions in accordance with GAAP, applicable laws, regulations, and organization.
  • Assists with the month-end closing process to ensure all transactions are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain and update vendor and customer accounts.
  • Perform other special projects, ad-hoc reporting, balance sheet reconciliations and analysis as needed.
  • Works closely with all departments necessary to ensure that the processes, programs, and services are accomplished in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with policies and procedures and in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.
Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.
  • Two to four (2-4) years' accounting working experience.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, financial statements, accounting theory, and internal controls
  • Ability to prepare reports and business correspondence.
  • Strong systems background using an integrated financial software package and generally tech-savvy.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills, able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to build relationships with other team members both within and outside of the Finance/Accounting department.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong desire for continuous learning and ability to drive process improvement.
  • Computer proficiency, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
Qualifications Desired
  • Knowledge of for-profit and not-for-profit background gained in a complex environment with a complete understanding of fund accounting.
  • Knowledge of MIP, ADP, Questica, and Salesforce.
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements.
