Systems Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis.
We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.
Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, passionate individual to join our Ground Support Equipment Team. As part of this team, you will be a technical leader, taking system-level ownership of the design and architecture for highly complex charging and thermal conditioning systems for VTOL electric aircraft. This role requires solving ambiguous, multi-disciplinary problems and mentoring junior engineers. Work will include the detailed design, procurement and testing of systems, assemblies and components.
The projects will be dynamic, fast paced, and well-funded.
- Lead the selection and design of ground-based fluid handling components, sub-systems and systems for use in electric aircraft ground support.
- Define system architecture and technical requirements for packaging power electronics and associated control circuitry into charging equipment in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and external vendors.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for cross-functional engineering teams and external vendors on major sub-systems.
- Draft P&IDs, manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions for the above projects.
- Procure hardware from suppliers, and coordinate manufacturing with internal and external machine shops and assembly shops.
- Own the coordinated testing program, including defining comprehensive test plans and criteria, to validate that design objectives have been met.
- Support equipment in field, around the world.
- B.S. degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Strong problem solving skills and engineering fundamentals.
- Determined & engaging communication and social skills. The ability to work with many different people, manage working relationships and communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and efficient manner.
- 5+ years of work experience in relevant roles demonstrating expertise in mechanical system design.
- Proven experience with system-level design and architecture development, not just component design.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and mentor team members.
- Demonstrated hands-on prototyping and debugging experience.
- Strong proficiency modeling and drafting in a professional CAD package (ie: CATIA, NX, Solidworks).
- Experience designing electronics enclosures and mechanical machinery for low to medium volume production.
- Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time.
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $131,700 - $181,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
