Position: Reliability Engineering Graduate Intern (summer 2026)

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis.

We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is excited to welcome a passionate graduate student to join our Reliability team as a Reliability Engineering Intern for Summer 2026. As a Reliability Engineering Intern, you will work closely with Reliability, Systems, and Flight Test teams to support data-driven reliability analysis. You will help establish scalable frameworks for collecting, organizing, and analyzing system-level test and flight data to enable reliability insights and continuous health monitoring.

This role is ideal for students interested in reliability engineering, data analysis, and aerospace testing, with hands‑on exposure to both ground and flight test environments. If you’re eager to apply your skills in a dynamic, mission‑driven environment, we’d love to have you on board!

Location: San Carlos, CA with occasional travel to Marina, CA

What You’ll Gain
  • Hands‑on experience with real aircraft systems and flight test data.
  • Exposure to end‑to‑end reliability engineering, from test planning to data analysis.
  • Opportunity to contribute to safety‑critical systems in an innovative aerospace environment.
  • Mentorship from experienced reliability and systems engineers.
  • Understanding of how to identify actionable solutions in large data sets that drive measurable improvement
Responsibilities System-Level Test Data & Reliability Framework
  • Gather and organize data from system‑level ground and environmental testing.
  • Help develop a structured framework to support reliability analysis (e.g., failure tracking, usage profiles, test conditions).
  • Support correlation of test data to design requirements and reliability metrics (MTBF, failure rates, trends).
Reliability & Flight Test Data Tracking
  • Assist in tracking and organizing flight test and reliability test data across multiple systems.
  • Develop dashboards, trackers, or databases to improve data visibility and traceability.
  • Support analysis of test results to identify reliability risks, anomalies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Assist in data analysis focused on identifying actionable solutions to issues at the component, system, fleet, and process level.
Continuous Health Monitoring
  • Support development of continuous health monitoring (CHM) concepts using test and flight data.
  • Help identify key health indicators, thresholds, and trends for critical systems.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to translate data insights into actionable reliability improvements.
Required
  • Currently pursuing a MS or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Data Science, or a related field. Rising juniors or above enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program are also welcome to apply.
  • Strong analytical skills with interest in data‑driven engineering.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, Excel, SQL, or similar).
  • Ability to work with large datasets and draw clear technical insights. Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
Desired
  • Exposure to reliability engineering concepts (FMEA, MTBF, Weibull analysis, failure tracking, accelerated life testing, RCA).
  • Experience with analysis of time‑series test, flight, or sensor data.
  • Familiarity with dashboards or data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, Python plotting libraries).
  • Interest in aerospace systems, testing, or electric aircraft.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, or energy storage systems for electric propulsion.

The pay range for graduate interns with a Bachelor, Master, and/or Ph.D. degree is $5,550 - $7,800/ month, and for undergrad students - $22.00 - $31.00/ hour.
