Position: Vehicle Technician II (Mechanic)

The Job

Swing Shift or Graveyard Shift ONLY

Starting Pay $33.36 per hour (non‑negotiable)

* Must be able to work both shifts (swing/graveyard) and divisions (San Bernardino/Montclair). Shifts/Divisions assigned based on seniority.

Omnitrans, provider of public mass transit for the San Bernardino Valley in Southern California is seeking a highly skilled professional to join our award‑winning team. The ideal candidate will perform skilled diagnostic repair and maintenance work on motor coaches, automobiles, and associated equipment; and perform related duties as required.

of Duties

  • Performs road tests of vehicles to ensure reliability.
  • Performs major mechanical repairs including engine, differential and transmission replacement.
  • Performs brake relines, including both heavy duty drum and disk air brake systems.
  • Removes, repairs, replaces and adjusts components of bus and/or automotive systems, including, but not limited to, engine, electrical, suspension, fuel, pneumatic, and hydraulic, and HVAC systems.
  • Pressure checks cooling system; replaces hoses, belts, fans and thermostats as needed; repairs or replaces radiators, recovery systems and water pumps.
  • Provides emergency road service to disabled vehicles.
  • Performs checks and repairs on HVAC systems including the use refrigerant recycling machines.
  • Completes written documentation of completed repairs and/or work completed.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses and repairs equipment failures.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections of transit coaches, light trucks and other vehicles/equipment.
  • Uses test equipment such as a test meter/DVOM; is proficient in computer diagnostics.
The Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) or more years of experience in vehicle maintenance and/or formalized training in the maintenance of light and heavy vehicles; and a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must have a Class B permit and endorsements prior to first day of work. Must be able to obtain a Class B license by the end of probationary period.

Knowledge of:

  • Techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
  • Safe working practices relating to all assigned job duties.

Ability to:

  • Diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Operate computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment.
  • Interpret diagrams and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Receive, transmit and record information clearly, accurately and legibly.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Read and understand policies, procedures and Agency regulations.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with passenger endorsements.

Tools:

  • Must provide all necessary tools up to 3/4" drive.
Special Conditions

Positions in this job classification are considered safety‑sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations.
