Overview
The Sheriff’s Department is seeking skilled Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Trainees who are responsible for the general maintenance, repair and modification of buildings, fixtures and equipment within the correctional/institutional facilities. Title:

- Perform general maintenance, repair and modification of buildings, fixtures and equipment within correctional/institutional facilities.
- Work under training conditions to develop skills toward promotion to the journey level.
- Experience option:
Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience maintaining large commercial, large industrial or large institutional facilities, performing skilled tasks in electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. - Or Certification option:
Certification from an accredited trade school or college in electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, or air conditioning. Certification must be attached with the application. - Note:
Residential or light commercial new construction experience is not qualifying. Describe relevant institutional maintenance experience in the Work Experience section. Preference for experience in maintenance of institutional buildings, electrical wiring, plumbing systems, and HVAC systems. Possession of Universal CFC Card or welding certification is desirable; indicate certification numbers on the application. - Promotion eligibility:
Trainees are eligible for promotion to Sheriff’s Maintenance Mechanic ($26.02 - $35.78 hourly) upon successful training and probation; promotion to Sheriff’s Maintenance Mechanic must occur within 24 months or the employee may be terminated. - Sponsorship:
San Bernardino County cannot consider visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Must possess one of the following.
- Background:
Applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony. - Shift: The jail facilities operate 24/7; availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call is required.
- Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
- Physical:
Incumbents must climb ladders and may need to bend, stoop, twist and crawl in ditches, tunnels and tight spaces; occasionally lift or move heavy objects.
- A competitive evaluation of qualifications will be conducted based on the application and supplemental questionnaire. Provide as much relevant work experience as possible, as resumes will not substitute for the application materials.
