Job Summary
To perform skilled work involving the installation, repair, and replacement of carpeting, tile, and other materials on floors and similar surfaces.
SupervisionReceives general supervision from the Carpentry and Related Trades Supervisor and may receive work instructions from a lead carpenter. Exercises no supervision.
Examples of Duties- Estimate quantities of materials required to complete assigned jobs involving covering floors.
- Load material for a given job into a truck.
- Ensure all supplies and materials are available before beginning a project.
- Disconnect and/or remove obstructions such as furniture.
- Measure and cut floor covering and foundation materials such as padding and building paper to fit projections and openings.
- Lay foundation material for floors, if required, and finish materials such as asphalt tile, vinyl tile, rubber tile, linoleum, and other sheet goods.
- Lay out guidelines and execute designs.
- Cover floor material if required, and apply base, reducer strips, and carpet strips.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools to perform assigned tasks.
- Operate forklift.
- Perform job‑related duties as assigned.
Education and Training: Three years of increasingly responsible experience laying carpeting, resilient floor tile, and linoleum. High school graduation or equivalent.
Licenses: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license at time of appointment and during employment in a position in this class.
Additional InformationFingerprinting, drug, and tuberculosis testing is required of all successful candidates new to the district.
