Overview

Learn How to Become Registered As An Environmental Health Specialist. The Public Health Department is recruiting for Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) Trainees who, under training conditions, perform health inspections in programs such as Food Protection, Recreational Health, and Insect and Rodent Vector Control. Duties include inspecting properties for compliance with environmental health laws, investigating citizens' compliance, issuing correction notices, monitoring corrective or cleanup activities, assisting in the preparation of legal actions and prosecuting offenders, and assisting with community disease and environmental control programs.

Positions may be assigned to district offices in San Bernardino, Hesperia, or Rancho Cucamonga. For more information, refer to the Environmental Health Specialist Trainee job description.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect properties and establishments for compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.
  • Investigate citizens' compliance and issues related to violations.
  • Issue correction notices and monitor corrective or cleanup activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of legal actions and participate in prosecuting offenders of environmental health laws.
  • Assist with community disease and environmental control programs.

Qualifications
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Ecology, Entomology, Geology, Hydrology, Climatology, Environmental Science (e.g., Food Science, Water Quality/Hydrology), or related natural sciences.
  • Letter of Eligibility: Must possess a valid Letter of Eligibility issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), affirming eligibility to work as an EHS Trainee. A legible copy must be submitted with the application by the filing deadline. Conditions

of Employment
  • Work Schedule: May be required to work some evenings, weekends, and on-call.
  • Physical: May be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, or hike during investigations.
  • Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
  • Pre-Employment Process: Background investigation (verification of employment history and education), fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.
  • Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
Promotion and Training
  • Trainees must obtain a valid registration as an Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) within 36 months of hire or employment will be terminated. Trainees may promote to EHS I after training completion, a satisfactory work progress report, and obtaining REHS certification from the California CDPH.
  • Trainee period includes any time employed as an EHS trainee in other jurisdictions; if not successful in obtaining REHS within 36 months, employment as a trainee may be terminated.
  • Applicants must meet both education and letter of eligibility requirements as stated above.
