JOB SUMMARY

Tutors learning handicapped and/or physically handicapped students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to remedy academic deficiencies to meet goals and objectives of Individual Educational Plans; and to assist in the maintenance and updating of student records and files. Bilingual skills in English and a designated language is required for bilingual classifications.

SUPERVISION

Receives general supervision from a Resource Specialist;
Exercises no supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Administers diagnostic and achievement tests to pupils.
  • Participates in conferences to establish Individual Educational Plans for identified students.
  • Tutors students on a one-to-one or small group basis to remedy deficiencies in subject areas disclosed by scores on achievement and/or diagnostic tests of students with the goals and objectives of the Individual Education Plans as guides.
  • Compiles instructional materials to help meet the goals and objectives of Individual Education Plans.
  • Promotes the well-being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self-image and an ability to cooperatively play and interact with other children and adults.
  • Communicates with teachers and resource specialists regarding students  progress and needs.
  • Develops tutoring schedules consistent with the daily school schedules and special activities.
  • Maintains a log and daily records of student attendance, attitude, health performance and progress.
  • Explains the purpose and goals of the tutorial program to students, and teachers.
  • Attends and participates in periodic in-service training sessions.
  • Prepares, administers and corrects tests and records results.
  • Assists with student safety emergency situations as necessary.
  • Assists with student toileting.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING

Paid or unpaid experience assisting with the academic instruction of handicapped children is desirable. Additional specialized training in education or a related field is desirable.

  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • Completion of at least 48 semester units at the college level OR
  • Possession of an Associate s or higher level degree, OR
  • Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS

(At time of appointment and during employment):
An appropriate, valid California driver s license.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 36A. Most positions in this class work 6hours/9months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION
  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100%

  • Bilingual Certification. WEIGHT:
    Pass/Fail. This certification is required for bilingual positions in the class.

  • Assessment Examination. WEIGHT:
    Pass/Fail. This requirement can be met by one of the following:
    Completion of at least 48 semester units or (72 quarter units) at the college level, OR Possession of an Associate’s or higher-level degree, OR pass the Assessment Examination.

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.

  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.

  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.

  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
