The position is assigned to the Medical Services Department and is under the direct supervision of the Chief Physician and Surgeon. The incumbent is responsible for planning, directing, and performing all phases of the medical services provided at DSH‑Patton. Responsibilities include making professional decisions regarding general medical work and minor surgery, as well as appropriate referrals for services not performed on site.

• Sympathetic and objective understanding of problems faced by mentally disordered offenders
• Tact, patience, and emotional stability

Incumbents must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform effectively during physically, mentally, and emotionally stressful emergency situations without endangering themselves, patients, or staff.

• Legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners
• Completion of an internship in an approved hospital
• Drug screening approval prior to hiring
