Overview

San Bernardino County is recruiting for Accountant/Auditor Trainees who work under the supervision of higher-level accountants or auditors while developing the required knowledge and skills to independently perform journey-level accounting or auditing duties. Essential duties include preparing and analyzing accounting and financial statements, making adjusting entries in several subsystems of a departmental accounting system, and performing specialized accounting functions such as tax or cost accounting;

performing compliance and operational audits; and preparing audit reports with findings and recommendations. For more detailed information, refer to the Accountant/Auditor Trainee job description.

Summary of Benefits, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Auditing Pay Differential - 2.0% above base rate of pay (ATC/HS only). Certified Public Accountant Stipend - $750 annual CPA stipend for employees who attain and maintain a valid CPA License. The eligible list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill vacancies throughout the County as well as in the Special Districts Department.

Conditions of Employment
  • Travel:
    Travel throughout the County is required. Incumbents will be required to make provision for transportation. At time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.
  • Promotion:
    Accountant/Auditor Trainee is the trainee level within the accounting series; incumbents are eligible for promotion to Accountant/Auditor ($61,131 - $83,990 annually) upon successful completion of a training program and receipt of a satisfactory work performance evaluation. Incumbents must promote within 24 months or be terminated.
  • Sponsorship:
    San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
Qualifications
  • EDUCATION:

    Must possess a completed/awarded bachelor s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, economics OR a bachelor s degree in another field which must include 30 semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in accounting. Transcripts with qualifying coursework are required if degree is in another field.
  • No experience required.
  • IMPORTANT NOTES:
    Transcripts MUST be attached if qualifying with a degree in another field or you may submit them to employmentounty.gov by the deadline.
  • EDUCATION (continued):
    Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Examination Procedure

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the online assessment. The assessment will consist of an evaluation of skills and knowledge in the following areas (practice materials not available):

  • Accounting Principles and Practices
  • Fiscal Analysis
