Position Details

Position Title: Shuttle Bus Driver

Position Summary

The Shuttle Bus Driver is responsible for the safe operation of gas and diesel shuttle buses to transport UIW students and employees safely on assigned on-campus routes. Drivers are expected to provide excellent customer service in all interactions with passengers and the UIW community, as well as follow all state, city, and university policy and safety regulations. The Shuttle/Bus Driver reports to the Manager, Vehicle Services.

Note: Four (4) driving breaks are typical during shift, exclusive of lunch break.

Job Duties

Job Duty:
Pre/Post Inspection

  • Pre and post route, inspect entire exterior of assigned shuttle bus to identify any visual defects. Report identified defects to supervisor.
  • Pre and post route, ensure proper operation of the following systems: brakes, horn, windshield wipers, lights, first-aid kits, emergency flashers, door-opening devices, etc. Complete inspection booklet for each inspection.
  • At end of shift/route check for forgotten personal items and turn in found items to supervisor. Remove any large waste items.

Job Duty:
Driving

  • At start of shift, obtain route assignment.
  • Drive assigned route, picking up and dropping off UIW student and employee passengers within UIW campus following prescribed service routes and safety policy.
  • Assist disabled individuals when entering and exiting vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Duty:
Safety Concerns and Accidents

  • Immediately report emergency or imminent safety conditions to supervisor.
  • Respond to passenger issues and resolve as able.
  • Report all accidents to supervisor immediately and request police or ambulance service as needed.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to successfully pass required DOT physical.
  • Excellent driving record, as verified through state motor vehicle department.
  • Must possess strong customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of all state and local traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and UIW’s safety policies.
  • Must have the ability to drive for long periods of time.
  • Must be capable of maneuvering shuttles and buses safely and assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Required Work Experience

One (1) year of shuttle and/or bus driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Exceptional customer service skills.

Required Certifications, Licenses Or Registrations

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have driving record that is insurable, as required by UIW’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to successfully pass required DOT physical.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 11:15am-8:15pm with occasional extended hours when shift coverage is needed.
