Recreation Assistant (Summer Youth Program) – Temporary
Under immediate supervision, the Recreation Assistant is responsible for performing routine work in the recreational field with major emphasis on public contact. The position assists a facilities supervisor in the operation of recreation facilities and performs duties that vary depending on assignment. The role requires no supervision.
This is a temporary, unclassified position with no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. The position is at-will and can be terminated at any time for any reason.
Work Location- Various community centers and school sites throughout the city
- Locations and hours may change at the Department's discretion
- Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Monday – Thursday 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
- Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Performs record‑keeping duties, compiling results of team scores, individual statistics, and spectator attendance for league and tournament plays
- Prepares gyms, tennis courts, and softball diamonds for league play; lifts and carries equipment weighing up to 15 pounds
- Directs visitors to the proper person, facility, or office according to their requests
- Performs assorted maintenance duties pertaining to spectator areas, restrooms, and score‑keeper areas
- Organizes training programs for participants
- Submits payroll for officials and assigns officials for tournaments or extracurricular activities or referee athletic games
- Leads after‑school and arts & crafts activities, engaging attendees in sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling
- Cares for and ensures equipment is in safe working condition; checks facilities for safety hazards prior to the start of play each day
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required
- Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
- Knowledge of scorekeeping and playing rules for softball and basketball
- Ability to keep simple records and handle small amounts of money
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations
- Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment
- Applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education, or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet minimum requirements
- Selected applicants must receive satisfactory results from pre‑employment drug testing and background checks; additional checks may be required as necessary
- If selected, employment history relevant to the position will be needed for verification. Military service applicants may attach a DD214 to meet experience requirements
- Official transcripts, diplomas, certifications, and licenses must be submitted at the time of processing; unofficial transcripts or copies may be attached for consideration in advance
