Work Location

Ron Darner Central Operations Facility - 5800 Historic Old Hwy. 90

Work Hours

6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.;
Monday – Friday. Shifts are subject to change to accommodate weekends, holiday shift work, and rotating on-call schedules as dictated by business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Assist a Journeyman Electrician in installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, motors, and related equipment, and air‑conditioning systems in City‑owned buildings.
  • Perform minor electrical work and repairs under close supervision of an Electrician.
  • Assist in stringing wiring lead joints, putting up brackets and cleat cables, and drilling bolt holes.
  • Assist the Electrician in repairing electric motors and generators; installing inside wiring; installing, repairing, and connecting or disconnecting transformers and similar power station equipment and local communication systems.
  • Operate tools and equipment of the electrical trade to assist the Electrician in constructing service meter loops on the exterior of buildings and any service cable or wiring in conjunction with exterior work.
  • Drive truck hauling tools and materials as required; mix and pour concrete when required, occasionally lifting and carrying materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Furnish Electricians with tools and materials as required.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Must enroll within one (1) year in an electrician apprenticeship program.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of Electrician Apprentice license, or enrollment in Electrician Apprentice program.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Familiar with SAP/CRM computer systems.

  • Applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full‑time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre‑employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical components.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to learn National Electrical Code and City Electrical Codes.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to use hydraulic benders and pipe threading tools.
  • Ability to use the most cost-effective way to complete a job with the least interference of the area's normal routine.
  • Ability to climb ladders and perform related tasks associated with this job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, and high noise areas.
