Field/Service Technician, Installation Technician
Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. This role works at various locations and may require travel to another state depending on customer demands.
Essential Functions:- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized transmission work.
- String overhead wire.
- Set poles and anchors.
- Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switch gear.
- Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Frequently work with energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Use company radio properly.
- Operate heavy equipment.
- Understand basic rigging, hand lines and lineman knot tying.
- Use and maintain hand tools properly.
- Receive and follow directions.
- Learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Be familiar with induced voltage.
- Assist with the installation and hookup of a single‑phase transformer.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand equipment set‑up and grounding concepts.
- Work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
- Check voltage on transformers.
- Apply flag and tag procedures.
- Install and remove a service.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Know when to wear personnel protective equipment.
- Create and use a hand line.
- Use Kellum grips appropriately.
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Be willing to glove and work on high‑voltage transmission lines.
- Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
- 2+ years of minimum experience.
- Read and communicate effectively in English.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
- Travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Work for extended periods in various locations when required.
- Lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Work overtime when requested.
- Work outside normal hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms.
Work Environment:The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
