Description

The Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) offers a postdoctoral opportunity located at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC)/Center for the Intrepid (CFI) in San Antonio, TX. EACE is the leading advocate for research and treatment of Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients with extremity trauma and amputation, and leads efforts to enhance collaboration between DoD and VA care providers while conducting scientific research to minimize the effects of traumatic injuries and improve clinical outcomes.

What

will I be doing?

As the selected participant, you will primarily engage in research activities with the Senior Scientist for the CFI Military Performance Laboratory, a laboratory that conducts translational research to enable readiness and return Service members to high function after extremity trauma (e.g., amputation, complex limb salvage, tibia fractures).

Education & Development Opportunities
  • Gaining research and technology development experience in the clinical care of patients with musculoskeletal trauma
  • Expanding research knowledge in musculoskeletal injuries that will advance care for Service members with amputation
  • Collecting and processing human motion capture data
  • Gaining experience on multiple projects involving lower limb amputation
  • Learning about grant proposal development and submission
Appointment Length

EACE is prepared to make appointments immediately, pending review of applications and selection of a candidate. This is a full‑time, 8‑month research appointment, with the possibility of renewal for additional research periods depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.

EACE is a unique organization within the DoD, with teams of researchers embedded at the point of care across multiple Military Treatment Facilities nationwide. The research focus is on mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations, translating findings into clinical practice to improve care for injured Service Members and Veterans. About ORISE

This program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants are affiliated with ORISE for administration of the appointment, not employed by ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other agency. Health insurance may be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or completed a PhD from an accredited institution in Rehabilitation, Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related field within the last five years.
  • Able to obtain appropriate security clearance at Brooke Army Medical Center.
  • Highly competitive applicants may have:
    • Experience with mathematical and computer modeling & simulation, mechanics, multi‑physics numerical simulations, and sensor technologies.
    • Experience with human subjects testing.
    • Ability to meet physical demands in laboratory, hospital, and office settings.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills.
