The Groundskeeper performs complex groundskeeping work at a State Supported Living Center or State Hospital.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintains and improves the appearance of grounds and flower beds for the facility, including mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and ensuring the effective operation of sprinkler systems.
- Removes, plants and trims trees and shrubs; safely operates power- and gas-operated equipment; keeps groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment well maintained and accounted for.
- Performs minor repairs on equipment; removes debris, trash, and obstructions from parking lots, roads, fences and sidewalks.
- Assists in minimizing the presence and impact of nuisance animals (e.g., snakes, rodents, feral cats).
- Performs some minor maintenance duties as needed in conjunction with maintenance staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned to ensure safe operations; may require weekend and/or after-hours callouts.
- Works under limited supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
- Attends work regularly and may be assigned specific or rotating shift schedules, overtime, and on-call status as needed.
- Performs routine groundskeeping duties: mowing, trimming, fertilizing, removing and planting trees/shrubs, maintains cemetery grounds if applicable, and performs related tasks.
- Measures and applies pesticides/herbicides; conducts litter control and trash pickup; moves dumpsters for trash pickup.
- Operates gas- and power-operated tools safely; cleans and stores tools; performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance; maintains tool inventory.
- Follows scheduling for the grounds department; collaborates with team members; reports significant issues to the supervisor.
- Operates tractors with implements (front-end loaders, backhoes) for digging, debris cleanup, material transport, and utility work as needed.
- Maintains roads, parking lots, and sidewalks; may work extended hours during inclement weather to remove ice, debris, or address safety concerns.
- Traps and removes live animals humanely; disposes of dead animals and takes measures to abate future issues.
- Performs general maintenance, repairs, and construction work with maintenance staff; may drive non-CDL trucks to haul materials and transport items.
- Other duties include supporting disaster response/COOP activation with possible alternate shift patterns or locations.
Skills And Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge to safely fell and remove large trees near buildings and infrastructure.
- Ability to minimize nuisance animals (rodents, snakes, feral cats).
- Skill in safely operating power equipment (mowers, trimmers, tractors, backhoes, pruning tools) and various hand tools.
- Must meet facility driver requirements; ability to speak/read English preferred; ability to follow instructions and perform basic math; strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods; work in hot/cold conditions; collaborate well with coworkers and residents.
- Ability to lift/carry 50–100 lbs; maintain and care for tools and equipment; learn plant disease recognition and basic horticulture knowledge.
