Under direction, implements and manages the Education Center's health program designed to serve each student through the delivery of direct services, preventative care, provision of health education and the promotion of a healthy school environment as part of the City's Pre‑K 4 SA program. Work involves assisting students with medical issues, evaluating student needs, and developing and implementing care plans to meet those needs.

Exercises no supervision.

This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position, therefore, is subject to at‑will employment status, and is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Work Schedule

7:00 a.m.

- 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Nursing Services
  • Assesses student health status by identifying acute, chronic, and emergency needs; makes referrals to physicians or community agencies, as appropriate.
  • Serves as health advocate for students and conducts student health appraisals, including: nursing, vision, hearing, weighing, and measuring screenings; records screening results according to the Texas Education Code.
  • Administers medications and first aid to provide care.
  • Monitors and provides direct services and care to students, maintaining accountability for all care and services provided. Coordinates the management system to track administered medications.
  • Thoroughly documents all nursing assessments and care provided, and maintains complete and confidential Student Health Records.
  • Provides consultation to school administrators in crisis/emergency situations.
  • Notifies parents of accident or illness; may secure medical care for students in emergency cases if unable to reach parents or emergency contact.
  • Collaborates with administration and staff regarding communicable diseases, infection control, health and safety matters, and implementation of health-related plans on Individualized Health Plans (in IEPs).
  • Assumes responsibility for the care and well‑being of students, staff, and others with blood‑borne pathogens, and for the establishment of universal precautions and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Establishes and implements effective procedures for mandatory screening programs and makes referrals as necessary.
  • Makes home visits to assist with student health issues with the permission of the Center Director.
  • In the case of an emergency situation, may be required to lift and carry students weighing up to 50 pounds to move students during dangerous situations.
  • Develops and implements Center health programs and recommends changes based on findings.
Instruction
  • Assists with the development of health education curriculum and provides health education to individuals and groups.
  • Educates faculty and staff on health‑related topics.
  • Interacts with early childhood students at eye‑level to provide health counseling and instruction.
  • Develops a health management plan and provides case management for students who have specialized health care needs.
Consultation
  • Serves as health liaison between Education Centers, physicians, parents, and the community.
  • Participates in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees and develops Individual Health Plan.
  • Collaborates with other professionals regarding implementation of health‑related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.
  • Provides health counseling and safety education for students, parents and staff.
  • Participates in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  • Communicates regularly with parents, Head of School, Extended Day Manager, and campus and corporate staff regarding health issues.
Administration
  • Reviews and evaluates immunization records to promote a healthy and safe environment.
  • Compiles and maintains reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment, and orders as needed.
  • Complies with regulations and policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health, State Board of Education, and board policy.
