Engine Shop Service Technician - Big Bore Components Assembly

Holt CAT is the largest Caterpillar dealership of heavy equipment in the United States. We have a full-time, 1st shift Engine Technician – Shop position available at our San Antonio, Texas location, within the Power Systems Division at 5665 SE Loop 410 San Antonio, TX. Hours are Monday‑Friday, 7 am to 4 pm, with occasional weekend work. This mechanic position is responsible for big‑bore engine assembly, providing high‑quality teardown, inspection, and repairs of diesel engines (natural gas) in a shop environment, responding to customer needs in a positive, caring, and timely manner, and ensuring maximum value for work performed.

Education and Experience
  • At least two years of diesel‑powered heavy equipment engine repair experience preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform complex repairs such as teardown, inspection, and repairs of diesel engines (natural gas) in a shop environment.
  • Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams preferred.
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred.
Additional Requirements
  • Must have all required mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard).
Essential Functions
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
  • Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions and maintains equipment and components.
  • Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management.
  • Plans and controls cost of repair jobs.
  • Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return.
  • Mentors and helps train other technicians.
  • Maintains all equipment and work areas—keeps them clean and organized.
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies, company procedures, and standards.
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customer needs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, e.g., Pro Tech Technician Training Paths.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
  • Quality control analysis skills—conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings.
  • Operation and control skills—controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills—determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • Skill to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • Read, write, and understand information.
  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move objects, using abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet, and climbs ladders and/or equipment.
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
  • Routinely react to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and visually inspect work.
