Grade 15:
Starting hourly rate: $20.95. Rate of pay depends on qualifications.
Based on assignment, the Field Utility Coordinator I is an entry level position responsible for performing field and administrative work in support of dead-end main flushing, fire hydrant program, and/or water leak response within Distribution & Collection Operations. Evaluates priority and coordinates operational assignments with minimal disruption in utility service to customers. Responds to maintenance and construction activities during normal and crisis situations and maintains effective communication with internal and external customers, contractors, and governmental agencies.
The Field Utility Coordinator I receives general supervision and may be assigned to support dead-end main flushing, fire hydrant program and/or water leak response efforts depending on business needs.

- Facilitates interdepartmental teamwork and communicates regularly with management.
- Promotes and practices a safe working environment for internal and external customers.
- Forecasts and secures needed resources within area of assignment.
- Performs administrative duties to support field personnel activities by updating work orders and services requests in the computerized maintenance management system (INFOR) with findings, resource usage, and completion status. Creates follow-up work orders for other groups as necessary.
- Utilizes GIS, block maps, and/or as-built drawings in performing daily assignments.
- Organizes, cleans and maintains vehicle, tools, equipment and stocks vehicle with the necessary tools and supplies.
- May assist customers by answering general questions and providing appropriate information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Inspects and flushes designated dead-end mains in accordance with System procedures.
- Conducts chlorine and related testing at site and documents results and action taken.
- Uses and calibrates test kits to test different parameters.
- Keys and maintains field data in database.
- Conducts quality assurance checks to validate accuracy of data collected.
- Inspects selected sites in response to customer complaints of concern and/or potential pollution sources.
- Locates and identifies dead-end mains using GIS.
- May perform regulatory required sampling.
- Repairs minor issues with Hydrants.
- Responds to reports of hydrants with deficiencies; makes field inspections and diagnoses problems;
Tests hydrants and ensures proper working conditions. - Operates a variety of hand tools and equipment in the removal of moving parts, installation, and adjustment for small repairs done on Fire Hydrants.
- Responds to reports of leaks and no water complaints; makes field inspections and diagnoses problems in response to customer inquiries; makes minor repairs when problems are SAWS’ responsibility and advises customers of needed repairs when leaks are not SAWS’ responsibility.
- Coordinates and prioritizes schedules, assignments, equipment, and materials to ensure completion of daily assignments and projects.
- Operates a variety of hand tools, power tools and other equipment in the investigation of leaks and no water complaints.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of relevant experience in construction, utility plant operations or maintenance of water and/or wastewater systems.
- Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
- TCEQ Class “D” Water Distribution Operator License within 12 months of hire and TCEQ Class "C" Water Distribution Operator License within 24 months of hire.
- Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.
- Basic knowledge of Fire Hydrants and how they are operated and maintained.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials used in utility maintenance and/or construction.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply all applicable local ordinances, codes and regulations related to construction within the right-of-way.
- Knowledge of safe work and vehicle operation practices and procedures.
