Decommissioning Team Responsibilities

The Decommissioning Team is responsible for processing and facilitating large‑scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed off premises. Team members will also process large volumes of customer media to ensure that all customer media is sanitized and properly managed. Accountability of equipment throughout the process is vital for the security of sensitive information and the trust of our customers.

Technicians will be working in a team environment not only with other members of the team, but also with other teams and must be able to communicate and promote cross‑team functionality.

Amazon Data Centers protect customer data with utmost vigilance; selected candidates must be able to perform repetitive tasks without fault and adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that ensure customer data is protected and properly handled.

  • Take ownership of technical issues brought by their customer base, engaging other teams when needed to drive resolution.
  • Show a strong aptitude for troubleshooting and problem‑solving.
  • Resolve problems at their root and step back to understand the broader context.

This position will primarily be based out of Elmendorf, TX but the selected candidate must be able to travel to multiple sites located in San Antonio, TX as needed. The candidate must be a US Citizen and must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph.

Key Job Responsibilities

You will be required to engage in physical data center activities with or without reasonable accommodation. These tasks include planning and tracking capacity, rack deployment, rack cabling, hardware and software troubleshooting, and rack decommissioning.

  • Lifting and moving material up to 49 pounds each.
  • Working in cramped and/or elevated locations.
  • Bending, lifting substituirment, stretching, and reaching.
  • Standing and walking for up to 8+ hours a day.
  • Ascending and descending ladders, stairs, and gangways safely and without limitation.
  • Working in a noisy environment.
  • Working shifts longer than 8 hours to support 24/7 operations (covering night, day, weekend, and holidays).

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or A+, CND, Network+, or Security+.
  • 1+ year of computer hardware troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • Active US Government Security Clearance of TS/SCI with polygraph.
  • 1+ year of data center experience.
  • Experience in decommissioning and processing legacy hardware out of data center facilities, including unpacking/repacking fragile electronics and relocating large enterprise equipment.
  • Hard drive installation and removal, destruction and basic networking removal/installation, and clearing of configurations.
  • Familiarity with PC components—HDD/SSD/Flash/Removable storage media, RAM, CPU, motherboard, I/O devices.
  • Previous experience with IT equipment (racking & stacking gear, cable management, building computers, troubleshooting PCs, desktops, laptops) and experience migrating and decommissioning data center assets a plus.
