Surgical Technologist PRN

Methodist Children’s Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to work on a PRN basis.

Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting with the delivery of quality surgical care by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, coordinating with perioperative personnel, and ensuring compliance with AORN and regulatory standards.

Qualifications
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent. Graduation from a surgical technologist program OR 1‑year experience in a hospital setting prior to 9/1/2009.
  • No prior experience required if education is satisfied.
  • Completion of all required initial and ongoing training, competencies, and certifications specific to the system, facility, or department.
Licensing & Certification
  • Non‑certified:
    No license, certificate or registration required for the Sterile Processing Department. Other departments require no license unless the individual performed a surgical technologist position after 9/1/2009.
  • Certified:
    Must maintain one of the following:
    • CST – Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
    • TS‑C‑Tech in Surgery, certified through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Essential Job Functions
  • Plan and obtain equipment and supplies needed for assigned procedures based on physician preference and patient needs.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies according to manufacturer specifications; open sterile packs and instruments per aseptic protocols.
  • Monitor sterile field during procedure and take corrective action for any breach.
  • Prepare medications and solutions as directed by the registered nurse under physician orders.
  • Maintain accountability for instruments, sponges, and sharps; report any count discrepancies.
  • Follow safety protocols for timeout, handling sharp instruments, powered equipment, hazardous chemicals, and lasers.
  • Perform high‑level disinfection using established policies and procedures.
Additional Job Functions
  • Handle, pick up, deliver, and/or stock non‑controlled medications as directed.
  • Process and re‑stock supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient OR environment.
  • Collect and label specimens for diagnostic labs per hospital policy.
  • Assist with patient care pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedure, including positioning and use of protective devices.
  • Support the mission and vision of Methodist Healthcare System and comply with safety policies.
  • Report unsafe conditions and ensure safe equipment use per supervisor guidance.
  • Adhere to the MHS Code of Conduct and report any unethical activity.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
