We are seeking a Senior Accountant to join our Financial Affairs team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the university’s financial operations. The Senior Accountant will support the Controller with general ledger management, financial reporting, compliance, and audit preparation. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who is detail-oriented, collaborative, and passionate about higher education.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain the integrity of the accounting system, including account setup and system utilities.
- Record, classify, and summarize financial transactions in accordance with GAAP.
- Post tuition charges and adjustments in Colleague.
- Prepare and post journal entries for payroll, accruals, and prepaids.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts (cash, assets, liabilities).
- Support the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Assist with annual audits by preparing documentation and schedules.
- Support budget development and departmental budget reviews.
- Monitor compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures.
- Collaborate with departments to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Manage cash flow activities, including :
- Title IV and non–Title IV cash receipts
- Third-party billing and collections (A / R)
- Bank EFTs and G5 requests
- Analyze budget variances and provide insights to department heads.
- Follow up on delinquent accounts and monitor credit balances for refunding.
- Troubleshoot accounting system issues in coordination with IT.
- Provide backup support for other business office functions.
- Participate in the Hallmark Character Program , promoting our core institutional values.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum 3 years of general ledger accounting experience
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (intermediate to advanced)
- Excellent attention to detail, analytical ability, and time management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work collaboratively
- Experience in nonprofit or higher education accounting
- Familiarity with ERP systems such as MAS
90 / 100 / 200, Dynamics GP, or similar
- Strong grasp of fund accounting and nonprofit reporting
- Knowledge of financial statement preparation and analysis
- Familiarity with state and federal regulations applicable to higher education
