Job Type & Schedule

Full‑time, Regular, Standard, Non‑Management;
Day shift (Monday‑Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm); 5% travel required.

Salary
  • Transportation Engineer II: $69,572 – $114,099
  • Transportation Engineer III: $76,530 – $129,430
  • Transportation Engineer IV: $84,182 – $142,374
Responsibilities
  • Assist districts with bridge inspection‑related matters.
  • Develop specifications for special bridge design details and projects.
  • Review shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.
  • Design complex bridge projects and perform specialized design.
  • Perform complex structural analysis of bridge designs.
  • Perform inspections, structural evaluations, and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
  • Rate and monitor load‑carrying capacities of bridges.
  • Conduct structural review of complex forming, falsework, and erection details.
  • Recommend bridge replacement, rehabilitation, and repair of damaged bridges.
  • Review and check special designs and solutions for unique structural problems.
  • Review designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related science; higher degrees accepted by TX PELS.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Texas (or licensed in another U.S. state, with requirement to obtain Texas license within six months).
  • Valid driver’s license; driving a state vehicle required.
  • Open Water Diver certification if performing underwater bridge inspections.
  • Completion of comprehensive training on the Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual or NICET Level III/IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire.
  • Experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent) in bridge design, rehabilitation, and repair; graduate‑level education may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures, fatigue and fracture mechanics, bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations, bridge inspection and appraisal methods and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others and to facilitate group communication and decision‑making.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Open Water Diver certification (if required).
  • Bridge Safety Inspection certification (NICET Level III/IV) within one year of hire.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat (below 32 °F and above 100 °F for more than one hour), noise, moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Sedentary work with occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs and carrying small tools.
  • Pre‑employment physical required.
  • Must pass a drug test; subject to random drug testing.
