Job Summary
Under general supervision, school crossing guard is responsible for performing routine pedestrian safety work in the vicinity of a school. Guides school children at intersections before and after school. Work may be full or part time and may require working split shifts. Term of employment is during the fall and spring school year only. This unclassified position has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission and is at-will.

Work Hours7:00 a.m.
- 8:00 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.
- 3:20 p.m. Monday - Friday. Schedules may vary based on facility.
- Places traffic cones in street before school is open and after school hours, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing 7 pounds.
- Guides school children across streets and assists disabled children and small children in crossing.
- Notifies police headquarters of hazards and pedestrian accidents in their vicinity.
- Calls 311 when school flashing lights are not working properly.
- Clears crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans, and other items to prevent injuries to children.
- Keeps accurate count of children crossing in the morning and in the afternoon.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- One year of full-time experience defined as 30 or more hours per week for 12 months; or one year of higher education defined as 30 credit hours at an accredited college or university.
- Previous school crossing guard experience.
- Knowledge of City traffic regulations.
- Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices.
- Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
- Ability to establish friendly relations and secure the cooperation of school children.
- Ability to remain alert at all times while performing routine duties.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Working conditions are primarily in an outside environment with exposure to temperature extremes, dust, and noise.
