Substitute Teacher

Position Description

The Lower School Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role supports the academic and social‑emotional needs of students in grades PreK–5 and upholds the school's mission and values.

• Maintain classroom discipline and a positive learning environment in accordance with school policies and Lower School expectations.
• Implement lesson plans provided by the regular teacher, ensuring continuity of instruction and student engagement.
• Organize students for practical instruction and support transitions throughout the day.
• Complete a Substitute Teacher Report Form to communicate with the regular teacher about the day’s activities and student progress.
• Collect and organize student work for the regular teacher’s review.
• Communicate professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
• Comply with and support all school regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Lower School Division Head or designee.

• Bachelor’s degree required; coursework or experience in elementary education preferred.
• Prior experience working with children in a school or educational setting.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow lesson plans and adapt to classroom needs.
• Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and reliability.

• May be required to stand, walk, and supervise students for extended periods.
• Work in a dynamic school environment with young children and a variety of classrooms.
• Work primarily in a climate‑controlled classroom; may occasionally work outdoors.
• Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 25 lbs.
