Job Summary

The Research & Instruction Librarian works as part of a dynamic team of library faculty and staff to serve the information and research needs of Our Lady of the Lake University by collaborating with faculty to support student learning and information literacy development as part of the Instruction and User Services team. The librarian designs and delivers instruction, develops online learning resources, provides reference services, and supports faculty and students through research consultations.

Responsibilities include outreach, collection development in assigned subject areas, and support for instructional sites in Houston and RGV as well as online programs.

Performance Evaluation Metrics
  • Research Support and Information Literacy Effectiveness:
    Evaluates and strengthens student learning by analyzing instructional and reference data. Designs, implements, and assesses information literacy outcomes to ensure high-quality programming.
    • Number of reference transactions, research consultations, information literacy sessions, research guides, tutorials, and online learning objects created/used.
    • Feedback from consultations and instruction sessions, reference service evaluations, summative assessments, and peer feedback.
  • Outreach and Academic Support:
    Strengthens student success by building collaborative relationships with faculty and academic support centers. Promotes integration of information literacy into courses and programs through targeted outreach.
    • Faculty outreach efforts:
      Number and quality of library events, programs, workshops, and webinars created. Collaborative projects with academic units across instructional sites.
  • Team Integration:
    Contributes to the Instruction & User Services department and library-wide initiatives by supporting both short- and long-term strategic goals of the library and university.
    • Active participation in developing and implementing objectives within the library's strategic plan.
    • Organization, coordination, and tracking progress toward goals
    • Completion of assigned strategic goals.
Essential Functions
  • Develops and delivers information literacy instruction for undergraduate and graduate students using a variety of modalities.
  • Designs learning outcomes, assesses student performance, and uses results to strengthen the library's instructional program.
  • Collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy into courses and programs.
  • Maintains knowledge of research practices in assigned disciplines.
  • Provides reference services (in-person, email, phone, chat) and individual research consultations.
  • Creates and maintains Lib Guides for assigned subjects and courses.
  • Staffs the reference desk, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with campus academic support units (e.g., Writing Center, Academic Center for Excellence, First-Year Experience).
  • Participates in library planning and outreach initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Meets annual standards of service for faculty librarians.
  • Maintains current awareness of trends in information literacy, library instruction, and student success.
  • Collaborates with the Instruction and User Services team on departmental projects and goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Skilled in developing learning experiences with appropriate technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills with diverse audiences.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
Preferred Experience
  • Second Master's Degree.
  • Professional experience providing reference and instruction services in an academic library.
