Position: Teacher's Aide (Part Time)

Under immediate supervision, assists the teacher with classroom preparation and daily growth and development of four‑year old children enrolled in the City’s Pre‑K 4 SA program at the Education Centers. Coordinates the loading and unloading of students on and off the bus at transportation sites. Plans and coordinates high quality outdoor learning environments. Ensures the safety of students enrolled in the City’s Pre‑K 4 SA program at the Education Centers.

Exercises no supervision.

This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position, therefore, is subject to at‑will employment status, and is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Work Location

Varies depending on the needs of the department.

Work Hours

Shifts will vary within operating hours: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.;
Monday – Friday.

  • Assists with preparing needed materials and supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and organized learning environment.
  • Actively interacts with children, engaging in powerful interactions, participating as partners in play, supporting and extending learning.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining discipline, supervision of students, and uses guidance strategies appropriate for young children.
  • Plans, develops and maintains safe, engaging outdoor learning environments.
  • Monitors and assists in maintaining order at transportation sites, in the classroom, motor skills room, playground, cafeteria, hallways, and other areas.
  • Maintains open communication with parents. Builds relationships with students to create a positive, safe, and welcoming school culture.
  • Assists with loading and unloading students on the bus into the custody of authorized individuals and works with assigned bus driver to ensure student safety and discipline and supervises students.
  • Assists with fastening appropriate child safety restraint system.
  • Supervises students as they cross the street with an authorized individual or accompanies the students as they cross the street without an authorized individual.
  • Monitors and maintains student discipline and reports violations to appropriate personnel.
  • Walks and checks the inside of the bus, both in and under each seat, at the end of each bus route.
  • Documents and reports all incidents, illnesses or injuries that occur during bus ride to driver and appropriate supervisor.
  • Operates equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical requirements include frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Subject to continual walking, standing, sitting, reaching, bending and crouching to perform essential functions. Working conditions are in an inside and outside environment with routine exposure to temperature variations and vehicle fumes.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Child Development Associate Certification (CDA) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment; OR Twelve (12) hours of college credit in Education or Childhood Development from an accredited college or university.

Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full‑time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
