Position Title
Specialty Instructor
- Dance – YMCA of Greater San Antonio, Alamo Heights, TX
This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Instructor will lead youth or adult classes in a specialized program area, such as dance, martial arts, arts, and humanities.
Essential Functions- Plans and instructs specialty classes for youth and adults following YMCA standards and guidelines or other nationally recognized certifications.
- Sets up and takes down class equipment and reports equipment problems.
- Demonstrates proper care, storage of equipment and supplies, and cleaning of the environment.
- Attends staff meetings and approved trainings as required; maintains current certifications relative to specialty area.
- Observes and discusses individual progress with participants, develops rapport and responds to related questions.
- Maintains respect for the child while providing discipline and guidance appropriate to age.
- Discusses and promotes all YMCA programs; motivates participants to commit to long‑term participation.
- Communicates effectively and exhibits a professional attitude with all staff, parents and children.
- Possesses a working knowledge of safety and emergency procedures, exercises sound judgment and reports unsafe conditions to supervisor immediately.
- Serves as Primary Responder for all accidents and incidents.
- Completes routine and required forms, including attendance records, observation records, and incident and injury reports.
- Might be required to work outside normal schedule for staff meetings, trainings, extended program hours, parent nights or association events.

- At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent work/education experience.
- One year of experience in the specialty area and preferably more experience leading or instructing.
- Positive role model to children, demonstrating emotional maturity and stability at all times.
- Ability to plan, organize and implement age‑appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Previous experience with diverse populations and ability to build positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Ability to individually lead a class and motivate and educate members.
- Child Abuse Prevention training and certifications required before the first shift; safety and prevention trainings required annually.
- Certifications required within first 60 days: YMCA‑approved basic life‑saving skills such as CPR, First Aid, AED.
- Work performed in an active environment.
- Requires sufficient strength, agility and mobility to supervise children’s activities safely.
- Visual acuity required for reading computer screens/documents and making necessary changes.
- High levels of alertness and concentration; analytical abilities and multitasking abilities needed.
- Accuracy, attention to detail, organization and time‑management skills required; initiative to meet deadlines.
- Repetitive stooping, bending, and lifting up to 20 pounds; ability to stand, walk, run, and participate in sports.
