Job DescriptionProvide one on one and small group tutoring in person to current Texas A&M University-San Antonio students in Behavioral Statistics and Research Methods. The Professional Statistics Tutor is responsible for meeting with professors to verify knowledge of course content and requirements. The Professional Statistics Tutor may also conduct information sessions regarding tutoring services offered. This position is part-time and the maximum number of hours per week that can be worked is nineteen.
Responsibilities- Meet with students individually or in group sessions either through scheduled or nonscheduled appointments.
- Explain, model, and offer academic assistance related to the subject or assignment.
- Offer suggestions for more effective studying for or preparing assignments for the course.
- Assist with the planning, implementation, and presentation of workshops offered through the Academic Learning Center.
- Follow up with tutees as required in a timely manner.
- Communicate with the Assistant Director of the Academic Learning Center regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions.
- Attend training sessions and meetings.
- Arrive for appointments and scheduled hours on time and as scheduled. If unable to work, the tutor should notify the leadership within the Academic Learning Center ahead of time or as soon as possible after the related absence.
- Maintain confidentiality of all involved in the tutoring experience.
- Perform and maintain focused tutoring responsibilities in an active, highly productive workplace environment that meets the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
- Other duties as necessary for effective tutoring.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in related field.
- No experience required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Math, Science, Engineering or closely-related field with a comprehensive understanding of the following Statistical concepts:
Relative frequency, box-and-whisker diagrams, probability of unions/intersections, hypothesis testing, binomial distributions, Z-scores, normal distributions, confidence intervals, and Chi-square distribution.
- Ability to work as a member of the team.
- Ability to work individually or in groups to complete projects.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations to students and faculty.
- Ability to build trusting relationships by acting with integrity, courtesy, and responsibility, even in the face of stress or demanding workplace conditions.
- Ability to display empathy and positive regard for others in written, verbal and non-verbal communications.
- Ability to work with colleagues and students by practicing punctuality, respect for deadlines, collaborative problem solving, and honest communication.
- Ability to be friendly and collegial with co-workers, faculty, students, staff, and visitors to the campus.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship building and conflict resolution skills.
