Associate Director – Institute for Lay Ecclesial Ministry & Service

Position type:
Full-time.

Reports to:

Senior Director of Programs.

Work schedule:

Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, evenings and weekends as needed. FLSA status:
Exempt.

Summary

The Associate Director works with the Director to offer well‑rounded formation programs for lay ministers in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The role oversees daily activities of various formation programs, promotes a culture of formation among the laity and clergy, and accompanies participants throughout their formation journey.

Responsibilities
  • Implement and assess the Institute’s formation programs in collaboration with the Director.
  • Serve as a contact, advocate, and consultant for program inquiries from pastors, pastoral leaders, individuals, and parishes.
  • Develop, implement, and assess distance‑learning strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s Department of Catholic Schools on course requirements for TCCB‑ED teacher certification, determine equivalencies, and remain familiar with local and national programming for lay ministers.
  • Assist in content, curriculum design, and evaluation for all formation processes.
  • Advise program participants and serve as Formation Advisor.
  • Promote events throughout the year related to these formation programs.
  • Recruit lay leaders primarily from the Archdiocese through parish visits, mail campaigns, telephone calls, social media marketing, etc.
  • Create marketing material by coordinating, writing, editing, and distributing content, including publications, press releases, website content, and other materials communicating the Institute’s activities.
  • Collect, analyze, and report audience feedback regarding programming.
  • Lead efforts to retain participants in the formation programs.
  • Identify trends in lay formation and provide suggestions for strategic planning.
  • Recommend opportunities for ongoing formation for participants via trainings, retreats, workshops, conferences, courses, etc.
  • Build relationships with clergy and lay pastoral leaders to foster understanding of the Institute’s offerings.
  • Participate in staff meetings, deanery/parish meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Attend required professional in‑services, retreats, or other events sponsored by the Institute.
  • Supervise support staff and collaborators as needed; may supervise the office in absence of the Director.
  • Promote some programs of the Institute in the Southwest region and with dioceses in Region X of the USCCB.
  • Adhere to safety training and protocols, protecting confidentiality of all information and complying with the Archdiocese Code of Conduct and Faith and Moral Policy.
  • Maintain a solution‑oriented approach and foster collaboration and commitment to the group’s mission and vision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Pastoral Ministry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in parish, school, or diocesan ministry, including at least 3 years of program design, implementation, or related pastoral experience.
  • High-level experience in administration of formation programs for the laity.
  • Teaching experience and knowledge of school processes preferred.
  • Diocesan Pastoral Center or parish experience preferred.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and valid vehicle insurance.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills
  • Bi‑lingual in English and Spanish.
  • Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Catholic Church Magisterium.
  • Working knowledge of formation or school processes, adult learning principles, and leadership development, including assessment of training needs and online teaching technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments effectively.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective pastoral communication in person and by phone with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Detail‑oriented, organized, self‑motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to a high service‑level standard and quality expectations.
Additional Requirements
  • Experience with computer software and Microsoft Office Applications.
Travel Requirements

Travel: 95 % local and 5 % overnight.
