Overview
The Deputy Chief of Staff is a key member of the senior leadership team and actively participates in the development of overall management objectives and philosophies necessary for the attainment of optimum efficiency in providing health care to South Texas Veterans Health Care Veteran population.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Education:
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine - The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- License:
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia - Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Note:
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies (non-US residency training followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee - Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they may have a limited scope of practice under supervision
- Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred Experience:
Demonstrate progressive leadership, mentorship, and management experience in a tertiary care environment - Demonstrate strong health care operations and planning experience including implementation and promotion of outpatient clinical access and hospital flow
- Promote innovation, inspire organizational excellence, ability in building teams, coaching clinical leaders, and engaging the workforce
- Demonstrates strong medical or residency education experience or strong research background
- Demonstrates knowledge of VHA and other accrediting bodies' standards and regulations, and demonstrate ethical character and professional conduct
- Physical Requirements:
This position may require potentially long periods of continued light lifting under 15 pounds, light carrying under 15 pounds, use of fingers, standing for extended periods, near vision, color vision, hearing (aid may be permitted), and mental and emotional stability

- Primary duties include but are not limited to: formulate and recommend plans for a comprehensive program of medical care
- Develop staffing, facilities, equipment, and supplies requirements to support an integrated program
- Appraise the effectiveness of medical programs in meeting patient care needs
- Promote development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching, and encouraging self-assessment
- Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure facility programs reflect the mission and priorities of VHA and VA
- Ensure clinical program goals are achieved within available resources and participate in resource allocation and program modification to meet Veteran needs
- Monitor and promote compliance with VA regulations and professional standards
- Foster a High Reliability Organization and continuous quality improvement in program and care effectiveness
- Provide oversight of credentialing and privileging, and monitor compliance and quality of practice of medical staff and licensed independent practitioners

Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
